What is Candle Meditation?
Candle Meditation, or Trataka (meaning to 'look' or 'gaze' in Sanskrit) involves gazing at a particular object, dot or flame in order to achieve a peaceful, trance-like state. The element of fire is hypnotic, it represents passion, inspires emotional cleansing, deep thought and creativity, and when used in combination with calming scents, the practice of candle meditation has a deep healing effect on the body and mind. Trataka improves focus, sleep quality and lowers blood pressure, and according to a study published in Scientific Reports, it improves motivational and cognitive functioning by altering the way our brain networks operate, leading to better attention and mental health!
How do we do it?
First, it's good to find a quiet, comfortable spot where you wont be easily distracted. Light your candle and focus on the flame as it moves and dances. Take deep, slow breaths, allowing your muscles to relax a little more with each breath. Keep watching the flame, and let your mind wander. Listen to each thought as it passes and simply observe it on its journey in, and out of your mind as you move through your consciousness. If you feel the need to focus on a particular thought or idea, do so, otherwise simply let it go, and continue exploring the inner workings of you...
Candle Meditations can last however long you like, but even just a few minutes is enough to have a calming effect on the mind. When you are finished, simply blow out your candle and continue on with your day. Splashing or spraying some cool water over your eyelids gives a refreshed feeling, and promotes alertness, focus and concentration.

How do we make our Candles?
First, we melt down a whole load of soy wax flakes. Then, once it reaches the right temperature we add our wonderful fragrance oils and gently mix them together until the wax cools enough to be carefully hand poured into silicone moulds and left to harden for around three hours before the wick is trimmed, and the candle is stored in a cool dry place to preserve its powerful scent.
Our candles are packaged in 100% recyclable cardboard boxes and wrapped in paper. Check out our Values and Ethics page to see why we say no to single use plastics!
